An elderly woman owned a modest home on Milwaukee’s South Side. One day a stranger knocked on her door and told her she needed new siding and a new roof. He told her she could use the equity she had patiently built up over many years to finance the repairs. The high-interest loan payments consumed 70% of the woman’s monthly income.

Legal Aid Society's Taxpayer Assistance

Our Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic provides free legal assistance for low-income Wisconsin residents who are facing a controversy with the Internal Revenue Service.  For example, disputes over the Earned Income Tax Credit, Audits, Tax Court, Installments, and Offers In   Compromise.  Please contact our clinic to see if you qualify.  Call 414-727-5326 or toll-free at 888-565-8135.

Legal Aid Society Provides Foreclosure Mediation Assistance

If you are participating in the Milwaukee Foreclosure Mediation Program and would like an  attorney to represent you at your mediation conference, please call Legal Aid's Foreclosure Intake and Referral Hotline at 414-727-5373.

The Milwaukee Foreclosure Mediation Program is a voluntary program which allows the parties in a foreclosure action to meet with a mediator and provides an opportunity for the homeowner to negotiate a work out (such as home retention or an alternative to foreclosure) with the lender/servicer. Our Guardian ad Litem Division serves by court appointment as advocates for children in the Family and Children’s Courts.

Mental Disability Law Division

The Mental Disability Law Division serves by court appointment as defense counsel in mental commitment cases and as guardians ad litem in judicial reviews of protective placements.

Civil Division

The Civil Division provides representation in family law, consumer and bankruptcy matters, housing issues, public benefits, and civil rights.
